So, as we moved the clocks forward this past weekend, we thought it was the perfect time to actually take you back in time to the decades when life was simpler – and candy was at it’s best!
What made us happier than hopping on our bikes and riding as fast as we could to buy our weekly candy supply? How could we resist the long-lasting Astro Pop, or your dentist’s favorite Bit O’Honey, Banana Splits, Mary Jane’s or Slo-Pokes! Or trading Jolly Rancher flavors with your friends. (I didn’t like grape, so I was always happy to trade for watermelon).
And who could forget Bazooka bubble gum? Not only did you get a great piece of gum, but you got a comic too! How much fun was it to blow bubbles! Gold Mine gum was also another favorite gum that gave you a two for one treat. Not only did you get a great gum that was delicious, but you got a cool bag to keep it in. And who could forget Fruit Stripe Gum (even though the flavor only lasted 5 seconds!), Razzles or Chicklets! You would rip open the pouch and pour the entire pack in your mouth!
The same could be said about pop rocks! You couldn’t have just a few pieces, you had to eat the entire pouch in one mouthful.
Fashion also played a part in candy. How cool did you feel wearing a candy necklace or wristwatch, and then eating it? Or braiding licorice laces to make a bracelet, or putting a Ring Pop on your finger – pretending that you had a huge diamond ring!
There are so many memories... The best part about it is that they’re still being made – and are available at Dewey’s Candy in Brooklyn, NY (DUMBO), your retro candy headquarters!

Astro Pops Are Back!
"The World's Favorite Pop Is Blasting Off Again"
Dewey’s is excited to announce that we’ll be carrying the original
Astro Pop, the worlds’ longest standing lollipop. After disappearing mysteriously from the
market, Dewey’s will be bringing this iconic candy back to our store starting this week.
Astro Pops are packed with taste, not to mention great childhood memories for so many people.
The year was 1963 and Americans were obsessed with two things: the
Beatles, and the Race-To-Space. It would be six more years until we reached the moon, but we did get the Astro Pop-
“…two rocket
scientists working on
the space program in El
Segundo, CA decided to
quit their jobs and create the Astro Pop, modeling the pop after a three-stage
rocket. They built special equipment to speed up the production of the
cone-wrappers at high-speed as well as other equipment they made by hand. Astro
Pops® were very unusual to manufacture because the cone-wrapper became the mold
for the candy. Hot candy was poured directly into the wrapper, then a paper
stick was added and capped off with a layer of wax.”
And history was never the same! Millions were sold and the candy was so popular it inspired
apparel, toys, a soda, video games, and even art!
Dewey’s will be
carrying the original, individual 3-flavor Astro Pop. And for those who just can’t get enough of this childhood favorite Dewey's can also offer 24-pack cases. We’re expecting these to literally fly off
the shelves, so feel free to contact us ahead of time.
Get ready by watching the original Astro Pop commercial (Bonus
points if you know the lyrics!)
